American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists
Annual Meeting
About the Joint Meeting
The American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists met first in 1916 at the American Museum of Natural History (NY) and, with the exceptions of 1943–1945 and 2020, has met annually. In 2008, ASIH began to meet together with the American Elasmobranch Society, Herpetologist's League, and the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles. These societies agreed to establish the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (JMIH) at which each society has its own business meetings, but participates in topical scientific sessions that include papers given by members of all of the participating societies.
The purpose of the annual meeting is to conduct society business, to hold scientific sessions for oral presentations, posters and symposia, to present achievement and service awards, to select and present best student papers, and to provide opportunities for members to meet and socialize. The annual meetings allow members to keep up-to-date about each other's work, and provides a venue at which students may enter the scientific community of ichthyologists and herpetologists represented at the meetings. The meeting site changes from year to year around North America and occasionally overseas (e.g. Brazil, Costa Rica).

Call for Symposium Proposals
Symposia are important components of the JMIH that enhance the program by complementing the scientific sessions at which contributed papers are presented. Symposia focus on a particular topic, which provides another type of compelling and interesting experience for attendees. We strongly encourage symposia that cut across taxonomic boundaries and include a broad diversity of participants.
To provide a clear process, the ASIH Symposium Review Committee has developed guidelines for Symposium Proposals. Proposals are due by 31 December of the year prior to the meeting (e.g., 2026 proposals are due 31 December 2025). Please send proposals to Eric Hilton (ehilton@vims.edu).
